About the Artist

Ann Taylor qualified in 1973 as a graphic designer and worked as a medical artist in a large teaching hospital and later as a graphic designer for one of Manchester's Universities. In 1999 she returned to full-time education, graduating in 2003 with a BA Hons in Fine Art from Manchester Metropolitan University. She lives and works in Manchester.

Personal statement

My paintings start with a visit to one of the many Stone or Bronze-Age settlements around Britain or further afield, where I take photographs to use for reference once I'm back in my studio.

The photographs are used only as a starting point as I make no attempt to duplicate exactly what I've seen. The resulting painting goes beyond literal representation and is my personal response to that place, at that particular time. Colour, composition and textural marks are methods to create my interpretation of the original scene.
Some of my paintings are based purely on memories of different times and places throughout my life.
